Alternative Schooling Styles : Custom Schooling

Design the Best for Your Family

This style is also very flexible. It is used by parents who want the perfect program for their child and for their family. Although there's no way to know for sure, this appears to be the most popular style among homeschoolers.

Here's the whole set of instructions:

Ready?

1) Borrow your favorite ideas from other styles, mix freely, alter as needed.

2) Repeat for each child.

That's it.

This style is (more or less) teacher-directed, for use in home schools. It can be moderately to highly time and labor intensive. The parent must create the curriculum, select the books, and create the instructional methods, schedules, tests, homework, etc. It may take a year or two of trial and error before you have what you want. Although it is challenging, I suspect that you will also find it interesting and rewarding.

Quotes
"Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." -- William Butler Yeats, Poet and Author

"It should be your care, therefore, and mine, to elevate the minds of our children and exalt their courage; to accelerate and animate their industry and activity; to excite in them an habitual contempt of meanness, abhorrence of injustice and inhumanity, and an ambition to excel in every capacity, faculty, and virtue. If we suffer their minds to grovel and creep in infancy, they will grovel all their lives." -- John Adams, lawyer, writer, American Founder, and 2nd president of the United States

"Children require guidance and sympathy far more than instruction." -- Annie Sullivan, Helen Keller's Teacher

"Calvin: Let's try this path over here.
Hobbes: I don't see a path.
Calvin: We'll make a path!"
-- The Authoritative Calvin and Hobbes
